Campus Orientation Saqib Ul Islam @ GMU

February 8th, 2010

Although international students look up almost everything about their university of choice in America before their arrival, once they come here there are plenty of unexpected things to find out about the school, its academic program, the community and surroundings and maintaining legal status in a foreign country. This is why schools conduct orientation sessions at the beginning of each academic semester. According to student advisers at universities, there are many systems that a newcomer has to understand and follow in the United States, like immigration system, banking system and academic system. On top of that every system has its rules and regulations which have to be followed properly. So, when new students arrive here, not only they are fighting with the jetlag and physical adjustment in a new environment, but they also have a challenge of understanding and following a totally different rhythm of life. Their everyday life changes suddenly, thats why each university has its own student welcome center where student advisers educate students on settling down in the new life style and have their question answered through Orientation. In these Orientation sessions students are also being educated about the difference between the international students and local students, maintaining a legal status with full academic requirements, American Tax system and restrictions about working in the United States as an International Student.
